Social Media Postings

How to correctly (marketing wise) get people's attentions (positive!) using social media.
Right Click and Select Save Target As to get a PDF of this document.

1. This example from Green Web Hosting is both good and bad. Why bad? The lazy person in charge of the FB site didn't put any easy to read text BEFORE the hard to read link with the "-'".

It's good because it's an article that should be written by a hosting company. It targets the persons they want to sell to (people who care about hosting).  You, given what you're selling, are you writing articles that appeal to your market?

2. What was missing in the above example exists here, the text before the link. And good thing because the link is not in english!  Correct because it starts with a verb (Join) and tells your the prize. Bonus is the @manilaonsale w/c is probably a twitter handle/name - making this message fit for both Facebook and Twitter.

 3. The "standard" correct way of announcing a blog post in Facebook. Explain in short what the link is - not by repeating the message (like in #2 above). You do have 400 characters in facebook, make use of them. In the example below, it summarizes the link.

 4.  Good and Bad. Missing: Link to where you can download the app. (application for apple devices). Good because instead of describing it, it does give you a photo that's "cute enough" for you to appreciate. If you like it you can search for the app yourself.

 5. This is a facebook post via Instagram. Instragram is a social network of images taken using a cell phone, usually made to look older or with other visual effects. This is just a location photo of the person's window (in this case the person is a web celebrity Om Malik). This is correct because for celebrities, people do like to know where you are and what you can see, even if you're just a normal person anyway.

6. Tom is selling insurance to small business persons. That's why mentioning a Business World article online in his personal wall makes sense.  He can ADD some more than "interesting stats..." by saying exactly w/c stat appealed to him.

 7. This is a terrible example NONE of you should be doing. Guess what's wrong with it.
 8. Harry is the owner of Ain't It Cool News. A website for movies and movie leaks. A movie leak is a secret about some moving being made and now everybody knows about it.

So if Harry mentions a movie ("so funny")  w/o telling you what it is, you're now curious --what movie is he talking about. This is a curiosity play. This is also for TWITTER and not Facebook.

9. This is a typcial Twitter post, text and link to some photo. She used three proper nouns -with zero ambiguity, so people looking for their Galapagos, Iphone 4s and Lifeproof will show this tweet. You also don't know if she's a sales person for Lifeproof.

10. This is correct -- DMCI Homes, the big real estate developer is sending out an Eiffel Tower (architecture) trivia! This keeps people interested in an other wise boring person (brand, company) in Facebook. Real Estate Developers should follow it and do what it's doing!

11. Selling in Pinterest.com is okay. One way is to put a CLEAR photo of the product. Mention a deadline and discount and a link. The link is clickable, that's why many are saying that Pinterest is a great way to sell online for retail products today.

 12. Simple and to the point. A boom mike for the Iphone. If you don't know what a boom mike is, that's okay, you're not the market for Photojojo's product.

 13. The most popular way to advertise in Pinterest is to put a diagonal violator (that's what it's called) with the currency and price. Always use Dollars. And please explain what the product is, unlike the example below.

14. Virtual Assistants can also use Pinterest to sell. However using the word "PINOY" is probably not going to attract the foreigners who read it. They don't know what it means, but they do know what Filipino means. Again, end it with the link. The only image here is the text "Pinoy Link Builder".

There's also an in joke here, the text font he used is HARABARA, same one used in the Department of Tourism's IT'S MORE FUN in the Philippines marketing campaign.

15. What some people still don't know is to REPLY to someone in facebook comments, you must type @ followed by the person's name in facebook.  A small menu will appear with the names you probably mean - select that name using the mouse or keyboard and the "@" will disappear - replaced by the name in BLUE, this means the person will see your message in his facebook wall.

So don't just type the name, type the @ then follow it immediately (no spaces) with the beginning of the person's facebook name.  You'll get their attention faster as in the example below.

If Mye below also did an @jomarhilario - I would have noticed it too.

16. When you post events in social media, make your EVENT image interesting or informative, just like this CALENDAR Icon below.

17. Hi - lighting something on your Facebook Timeline wall.  If you want to create someone "lasting" for a few days in your facebook wall for new stalkers to read. Highlight the entry. Just make sure it's a BIG IMAGE.

How it's done (Using the wrong sized graphic)

Now you click on the STAR! (High Light)

It's now FULL WIDTH ...but too small.

  Here's how to do it, with the correctly sized graphic:

While we're at it, here's the new dimensions for Facebook images:
  • Cover photo: 851 by 315;
  • Profile picture: 180 by 180;
  • App image: 111 by 74;
  • Thumbnail: 32 by 32;
  • Images within wall posts: 404 by 404; and
  • Highlighted and milestone images: 843 by 403
And to dramatize it, here's an infographic SOMEONE created:

Very important: STARTING APRIL 1, you need to create that COVER PHOTO for all your BUSINESS PAGES. Read the infographic for the RULES for making COVER PHOTOS - just things like Don't market and such.

Yup, I know you're lazy to create that COVER PHOTO, so just click here to find places where the images are already CUT to the COVER PHOTO SIZE -- just over lay your own words by importing the image into Powerpoint and using the SNIPPING tool to make it into a small COVER PHOTO size again.

18. In social media just like in the Hunger Games, it's your LIKEABILITY that matters most to get those LIKES. But even if you're a billionaire, you won't get the THOUSAND comments that celebrities far less popular than you REGULARLY get.

Having millions of Likes as a Facebook Page helps him (Facebook Owner Mark Zuckerberg) get his 88,138 likes but being the bad boy gets him his 47 comments.  Also this post is self serving. Meaning it's not encouraging a lot of talk. Doesn't ask a question and the like.

Look at this celebrity (MINOR)'s number of likes and comments. Each one is heavily commented and liked.

Okay, cheating this minor celeb has 1 Million Likes, too. But you get what I mean. Strive to be a minor celebrity in your area by helping people and you'll soon get the same amount of likes and shares and comments. It helps if you DRESS UP too (in your photos).

19. To promote anything in your Facebook Page nowadays with the new rules from above, check out the 4 boxes under the cover photo. That's where. Starbucks is doing medyo right by saying "STARBUCKS CARD" and the card icon, but they should have put something else like "GET YOUR STARBUCKS CARD" on the image.

Doing green icons (card and world) with a green cover photo and profile image DOES HELP make the facebook page look like a single unit. So take a hint from their branding.

20. If you're looking at Google Plus as a promotion platform, make sure you have access to and use GORGEOUS images because that's what G+ is becoming now - the hotbed of nice HD quality photos and videos. It's like their living the future that our little 1MPBS DSL can't reach yet.

Go and learn and learn everyday. Google + tutorials coming up in the coming months. Super detailed.
